A man who set himself on fire Friday outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump's hush money trial is taking place has died, New York City police said early Saturday. The man, whom police identified as Maxwell Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, was in the designated protest area outside. It appeared to happen around the time that the jury for Trump's trial was fully empaneled — with 12 jurors and six alternates selected to sit for a trial that's expected to last about six weeks. It occurred just before the court took a lunch break. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Azzarello was born in 1987 and arrived in New York City earlier in the week.

NEW YORK (AP) — A prosecutor in Manhattan announced six additional indictments of men allegedly involved in a brawl with police officers in Times Square, but he said investigators were still working to identify several suspects and their exact role in the frenzy. “We have to ensure we identify and charge those individuals who actually committed criminal acts in this matter,” Bragg said. The man allegedly at the center of the conflict, Yohenry Brito, 24, was indicted on charges including two counts of assault by a grand jury on Tuesday and is being held on Rikers Island. He has said that only a “small minority” of new arrivals were participating in illegal behavior, but he has faced allegations of weaponizing the Times Square incident for political gain. Earlier this week, members of the Guardian Angels were seen roughing up a man in Times Square during a live television interview on Fox News.

Fentanyl was found near mats that children used for napping at a Bronx day care where one toddler died and three other children were hospitalized last week, the police said on Monday night. “It was laid underneath a mat where the children had been sleeping earlier,” Joseph Kenny, the Police Department’s chief of detectives, said at a news conference Monday evening. Chief Kenny said that investigators were working with federal authorities to discover whether the day care, Divino Niño on Morris Avenue, was opened as a front for a drug operation. Emergency medical workers were called on Friday afternoon to the day care center, where they administered the overdose-reversal medication Narcan and then rushed the children to hospitals. Medical tests showed fentanyl in the three children sickened but not killed.

Yenchun Chen, a Queens man accused of trying to sell fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine to an undercover officer, was being held at Rikers Island last month when he complained about chest pains, according to authorities. He spent several days at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in Midtown Manhattan, where he was guarded by two Department of Correction officers and received occasional visitors. On the afternoon of Aug. 9, according to the police, Mr. Chen — all 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds of him — slipped quietly away. Mr. Chen, 44, told guards that he needed to shower and they permitted him to bathe alone, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter. Five minutes later they checked on him, but the shower was empty, the window was open and a rope made of knotted sheets was dangling from it, the law enforcement official said.

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in the killing of O’Shae Sibley, who was stabbed to death on July 29 after a dispute over his dancing at a Brooklyn gas station. Mr. Sibley, a gay man who was a professional dancer and choreographer, was returning from New Jersey to his home in Brooklyn with four friends that night when the group stopped at a gas station in the Midwood neighborhood, the police said on Saturday. As they filled up their car, they played Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album and began dancing, officials said, at which point a group of men approached and told them to stop. The men yelled homophobic slurs and anti-Black statements at Mr. Sibley, who was Black, and his friends, Mr. Kenny said, all while demanding they stop dancing. Bystanders acted as “peacemakers,” and the men shouting at Mr. Sibley’s group began to disperse, Mr. Kenny said — except for the defendant.
